Nexans Olex History
Trusted by Australians for over 80 years
The history of Nexans Olex was the catalyst that launched the history of cable manufacturing in Australia. Let us take you back to 1940, when our story began in Footscray. Two great Australian companies, Olympic Consolidated Industries Limited and Nylex Corporation Limited, joined forces after each pioneering the industry to create revolutionary cable products that would change the way industries were powered. Up until that time, Australia had been totally dependent on imported cables.
80 years later, we’re still building the future of electricity. Only now, we’re committed to Australian manufacturing, supporting local communities and families as we continue to deliver high-value, safe and sustainable solutions for our customers.
The first factory opens
Footscray, Victoria, was home to a new factory for a cable making division of Olympic Tyres. 6 years later, Olympic Cables Ltd. was formed as a separate company.
More grounds for cable
Nylex Corporation ventured into cable manufacturing, opening up a cable plant in Lilydale and putting the newly-formed Nylex Cables on the map.
A powerful partnership
As Olympic Cables and Nylex Corporation each gained momentum in their own right, they joined together in July 1973 - and Olex Cables was born.
Dunlop builds a team
Pacific Dunlop purchased Olex Cables alongside Burton Cables, and Spinaway cables two years later. Together, the brands’ unique offerings would complement each other well.
Introducing National Cables
Until 1994, Burton and Spinaway Cables had continued to trade independently. This year, they were merged by Pacific Dunlop to form National Cables.
A new major buyer
In May 1999, the Management Buyout Consortium (MBO) came into play and purchased the Cables Group business in Australia and New Zealand from Pacific Dunlop.
Becoming a global company
Following National Cables with Olex Cables merge and the rebrand to Olex, MBO Consortium sold it's shares to Nexans.
THE POWER OF ACCESSORIES
Olex acquires a power accessories company called Australmold, aiming to provide a more complete solution.
Nexans Olex as we know it
The company officially became Nexans Olex. Taking advantage of a worldwide name and a beloved Australian brand, this change starts a long process of rebranding.
A new chapter in Nexans Living History
Nexans expands its brand presence in Australia, becoming Nexans Australia and introduces new innovative products and services, including Nexans modular wiring. Adding to our collective capability, our cable accessories business, Australmold, also aligned and rebranded as Nexans Power Accessories.
The tagline Electrify the future represents a new chapter. An electrification that is providing connections to new opportunities, technologies, behaviors and helping build a better future.
